Accueil Francoplaque.fr        Former algerian départments registrations (May 1951 - Oct 1963)

1st cutting (May, 28th 1951 - June, 30th 1957) : Alger - Oran - Constantine - Territoire du Sud
2nd cutting (from July, 1st 1957) :
Alger - Oran - Constantine - Batna - Bône - Médéa - Mostaganem - Orléansville - Sétif - Tiaret - Tizi-Ouzou - Tlemcen - Territoires du Sud
3rd cutting (from April, 28th 1958) :
Aumale - Bougie - Saïda
4th cutting (from October 1958 seemingly) :
Oasis - Saoura

Those departments have used during 13 years the same registration system as in France. Indeed, from May 1951 (the new cutting of the Île-de-France was not made), the first four Algerian départments received the 91 to 94 codes (France had affected the 90 code to the Territoire de Belfort).

Then, at the beginning of July 1957, thirteen new departments have been created at the same place of the four previous. Codes used were 9A to 9M and 9T.

On the following, many successive cuttings (creation and removal of departments) use the codes 9N, 9P, 9R, 8A and 8B.

Nota : the last registration numbers issued in 1963 are not known for all departments, so we present only the last known number with its issuing date. After 1963, go to the webpage showing the corresponding lists of departments and willayas. New explanation : all departments have not ended their series at the same time in 1963.

9N – Aumale     9P – Bougie

Nota : these two departments, created by decree no. 58-271 of March 17th, 1958, never existed, due to the attempted coup d'état of May 13th, 1958. Decree no. 59-1282 of November 7th, 1959, abrogating decree no. 58-271 of March 17th, 1958 and modifying the departmental organization of Algeria, did not include the creation of these departments, with the result that no 9N or 9P registrations were issued.

9R – Saïda

Normal series :
Series of up to three numerals and one serial letter from November 1959 : 1 A 9R to 843 C 9R (18/04/1962 and highest known)

Nota : This department, created by decree no. 58-271 of March 17th, 1958, was not created until November 1959. Because of the attempted coup d'état on May 13th, 1958, the decree of March 17, 1958 could not be implemented. Decree no. 59-1282 of November 7th, 1959, abrogating decree no. 58-271 of March 17th, 1958 and modifying the departmental organization of Algeria, unlike the two departments mentioned above, did include the creation of this department. This means that 9R registrations probably only began in November 1959 (number 88 A 9R is dated January 11th, 1960).

8A – Oasis

Normal series :
Series of up to three numerals and one serial letter from April, 1st 1958 : 1 A 8A to 626 M 8A (27/10/1961 and highest known)
--> Indépendant Algeria
