French Temporary plates from 1954 to 2009

		Exception : The TTT serie (000 TTT 00 format), used from 1984 to 31/12/1987, then replaced by IT (0000 IT 00 format) series, is used by (non diplomat) foreigners who temporarily import a vehicle in France. They may work in organisms, such as the Eurocorps in Strasbourg. This IT system may be used in all French départements, as described on JF Żuraw's IT plates web page.

History
The TT - TTC series (see (1) below in blue) has been issued from 1955 to 1984 with 4 serial number and a department code, then TTx series with 3 serial number and a department code used from 1984 to 1994 (see (2) in light green) and finally the TxT series with 3 serial number and only with department code 92 from 1990 to 1994 (see (2-1) in yellow)

Since 1/1/1994, temporary registrations switched from a TTx series (TT, TTA, TTB,...) to Txx series in each département (TAA, TAB, TAC, ...). More details are available on JF Żuraw TT web page. On the right, is located the expiration date (usually 6 months after the plate was issued, sometimes 3 or 12 months).
But most of temporary registrations are now organized by 4 manufacturers, that are authorized to issue plates in specific series and in 3 départements : 75, 78 and 92 : Peugeot, Renault, Citroen and since september 2000 Mercedes. End of August 1999, Renault reached 999 TSZ 92, ending its specific series and the series when back to 1 TLA 92.

Apart from the departments of Paris and Hauts-de-Seine that had reached the TAH and TAE series, all other departments have not exceeded the TAA series. Regarding the three French manufacturers (Peugeot, Renault and Citroën), the latest numbers issued in the FNI system, were respectively 644 TDH 92 10/09, 347 TNM 92 10/09 and 814 TXM 75 10/09.

Current codification, SIV system
Since the implementation of the SIV system, there are no more special series for vehicles temporary registered. Only four categories are now used : "temporary transit vehicle", "imported vehicle in transit", "pays de Gex vehicle" and "pays de Savoie vehicle". All of these vehicles are now registered in the SIV normal series, but their license plates have a red background with white characters. The first two categories have the expiry date at the right of the plate in place of the territorial ID.

Former serie plates before March 1954 :       

From October 1933 to mach 1934, transit plates used the XB suffix on regular serie plates.

From about April 1934 to 4February 1954, plates end with a letter corresponding to the port of entry. The digit following TT corresponds to the last digit of the end of validity year (such as, up there : 1939 or 1949 and X for Paris, 1950 and F for Le Havre).

Other letters : A Dunkerque, B Calais, C Boulogne, D Boulogne (then Bar-le-Duc then Metz after 1951), E Dieppe, F/G Le Havre, H/J Cherbourg, I Strasbourg (after 1950), K Saint-Nazaire, L La Rochelle, M Bordeaux, N Bayonne, O Orléans (after 1951), P Sète, Q Savoie Free zone (after 1934), R Toulon, S Marseille, T Nice, U Villefranche-sur-Mer, V Lyon, W Gex Free Zone (Ain, after 1934), X/Y/Z Paris and Z/ZZ for Algeria.  

From March 1954, the series show the département number and a red Oval for the year, replaced in 1985 with the year and month embossed on the plate.

Between 1933 and 1984, the free zones of Savoie (south of Geneva) and of Gex (Ain, north of Geneva) are registrered with plates ending with TT 1Q and TT 0W to TT 9W. From 1984 they run from 8999 TT 1Q to 9000 TTQ (Savoie) and from 9999 TT 9W to 10000 TTW always without the department code.
